Tips on how to light your oil painting

3 ways to light up your oil painting

  1. Natural light: Hang your oil painting in a room that receives ample natural light. This will bring out the richness of the colours and create a warm and inviting ambiance.
  2. Track lighting: Install track lighting above your oil painting to highlight it and create a focal point in the room. Make sure the lighting is adjustable, so you can control the direction and intensity of the light.
  3. Picture lights: Use picture lights to illuminate your oil painting from above or below. These lights are specifically designed for artwork and will enhance the colours and details of the painting.

What do I do?

I generally remove the glass from frames for some oil paintings, depending on the light in the room. A painting behind glass, that is facing a window may glare and it may be difficult to see the image. If you don't want to remove the glass, place the painting on the wall behind and above a table lamp  (or below a picture light) and it will light up nicely when the lamp is on.

This piece is glazed with many layers of pigment, so when it's lit properly, it really is luminous.
