My oil painting materials list

Here are my favourite materials for oil painting. I arrived at these choices through a lot of trail and error, and my advice is to find the tools that suit you, it takes time, but when you find your favourites, things get easier.

Canvas

Universal primed extra fine grain linen (2.1m roll).

Fine grain canvas board.

Ampersand smooth panels.

Tip - Ampersand smooth panels have a very smooth surface, which is fantastic for painting very fine details.

Brushes

Rosemary & Co Masters Choice badger hair long handled brushes for painting mid and foreground (in a range of rounds, liners, riggers, flats, filberts, fans, sizes 0-12)

Any old flat brush for painting the background and rough blocking in.

Tip - keep your old scraggy brushes to use for texture.

Paint

Daniel Smith, Williamsburg, Michael Harding, Mussini.

Underpaintings - Winsor and Newton alkyds or water mixable paints / Liquitex acrylics.

Mediums - non-toxic

Chelsea Classical Studio oil of spike lavender solvent.

Pure cold pressed linseed oil.

Glazing

Pure cold pressed linseed oil.

Varnish - non toxic

Chelsea Classical Studio Lavender Damar varnish.

or

Gamsol Gamvar picture varnish (can be applied when touch dry and allows the oils to continue to 'cure').

The below painting was created on a smooth ampersand panel
